Copland said of her famous teacher: “She knew the oldest and most recent music, pre-Bach and post-Stravinsky, and knew it coldly. “

Even as a performer, Boulanger was motivated by the need to educate, and his concert and recital programs offered unorthodox history lessons through daring juxtapositions of old and new. Whether in Polignac’s salon or in the concert hall, his moving interpretations of Bach’s cantatas and Monteverdi’s madrigals have generally shared the program with cutting-edge new music from Stravinsky, Paul Hindemith and others, selected and ordered to highlight the compatible relationships between key and tempo, as well as their most obvious differences.

Program Eight takes inspiration from Boulanger’s revolutionary approach to programming through recreations of some of his own idiosyncratic but inspired groups.
