Creating New Digital Spaces With Fall After-School Coding Camps – Lindsay Advocate
Pinnguaq’s Kawartha Lakes Makerspace will be filled with aspiring game coders and designers in person and online this fall as they launch four after-school workshops starting in October. These free courses introduce key concepts in programming, hardware and software, and inspire young participants to consider careers and educational opportunities in key areas of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) as they progress. ‘they develop new skills that they can start using immediately.
The four courses, offered in person (five spaces at Kawartha Lakes Makerspace in Lindsay) and online (15 spaces available for youth in Canada):
Explore the world through Minecraft – Wednesdays, 4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m., October 13 – December 8
Participants aged 9 to 12 can participate in Minecraft Education Edition to learn more about the world around us. Students will explore everything from roller coasters to the human circulatory system and even discover how empathy and cooperation can be used to solve real world problems.
Introduction to Java – Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., from October 13 to December 8
This course is designed to give young programmers, ages 13 to 17, an introduction to both the Java programming language as well as object-oriented programming (OOP). Java is a very well known and widely used language that applies to almost all fields. The course will review some basic coding concepts, but introduce several that are specific to object-oriented programming, such as inheritance, polymorphism, and encapsulation. The course will end with an introduction to the design of graphical user interfaces (GUIs).
Creative coding intermediary – Fridays, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., from October 15 to December 10
This course, for participants aged 9 to 12, is designed for learners who have already taken our Creative Coding Beginner course. Learners will have the opportunity to create their own coding projects as well as explore other coding platforms, games and activities that help consolidate basic coding concepts.
